The ways we work is changing, and the demands on our Building Code are changing too. Tradespeople expect their digital tools to be portable, dynamic and simple to use – available on site, in the truck or in the office. To make the Building Code as easy as possible to use and access, MBIE is transferring our traditional PDF documents into a smart eReader which will make the code easier to access, read and find the information you are looking for.
All reasonable measures have been taken to ensure the quality and accuracy of the information available. However, if you find any information that you believe may be inaccurate, please email us.
Benefits of using our digital reader
Our digital reader allows users to access Building Code clause documents on any web-enabled device including smartphones, tablets and desktop computers. Some of the benefits compared with the current PDF and hard copy documents include:
- compatibility with both desktop computers and most mobile devices
- the ability to expand and enlarge figures, diagrams and tables
- fully searchable content
- documents which are easy to navigate
- the ability to easily cross-reference within a document, to another document or to external URLs
- definitions terms will be directly available from publication pages
- the ability to create notes once logged in
Building Performance has selected four code clause documents for this digital reader pilot, which include some of our most viewed documents. Access to these documents is free and you will still have the ability to save, print and view as a PDF.
We recommend using browsers such as Chrome, Safari, and Firefox.
The four code clause documents we have selected for use in this pilot are:

Building Performance has partnered with tekReader, which is an eBook reader that delivers high quality technical documentation for any device. You don’t need to install or download anything as it is available directly from your browser.
To receive optimal user experience, we would recommend using Chrome, Firefox or Safari.
